Long-term residency in Thailand

Thailand is not a tax haven. Since 2024 it taxes foreign income you bring into the country. With the right visa and a company outside Thailand, it is still one of the best places to live and work remotely.

Timeline

Indicative. Your plan gives the dates for your situation.

  1. Structure plan and exit review
  2. Company abroad set up

Questions about Thailand

Not listed? Ask it on your strategy call.

Is foreign income taxed in Thailand?

From 1 January 2024, Thai tax residents pay tax on foreign income in the year they bring it into Thailand. Several LTR categories are exempt on foreign income. Planning what you remit, and when, makes a large difference.

Which visa fits me?

The LTR visa suits you if you meet its income or asset criteria. The Thailand Privilege visa suits you if you want long residency without those criteria, against a membership fee.

Can I own a company in Thailand?

Under the Foreign Business Act most activities are limited to 49% foreign ownership. BOI promotion is an exception for qualifying activities. For most remote founders, the company sits outside Thailand.

When am I Thai tax resident?

When you spend 180 days or more in Thailand in a calendar year. Below that, Thailand only taxes Thai-source income.
